Title: Axolotls
Author: Emilie Fox
Axolotls, also known as “The Mexican Walking Fish” are native to Mexico but are also found all over the world used as pets. Axolotls are known for their cute but funky looks, They have four legs, gills on each side of their head and a tail. Some people call them fish but they are actually a type of salamander.
Axolotls start off with the female axolotl laying the eggs in freshwater bodies. The Female lays hundreds of eggs, around the size of a pea, The eggs are jelly like and also have a dark spot which is the embryo. They eat the yolk inside their egg to help them survive. It takes them 14-21 days to hatch
Once they have hatched they are now known as Larvae. They have gills which act like lungs so they can breathe underwater, the gills look red-ish because of the blood pumping throughout them. They have also now developed a dorsal fin, lots of people mistake these for their tails, but this helps them maneuver through the water.
Next comes the Juvenile Axolotl. Now they have also developed internal lungs which are only used when there isn’t enough oxygen in the water. At this stage they grow limbs, first at the back, then the front. They eat smaller fish and eggs of the axolotls, which does mean they are cannibals.
Lastly, the Axolotl adult. Not much has changed since the Juvenile, it has only grown bigger. It eats the same things as before, Only now they also eat worms and insects. To carry on the cycle the female will find a male mate and it will start again.
Axolotls are unique amphibians. They are also endangered in the wild, That’s why lots of people have them as pets. We can help prevent them going extinct by keeping freshwater bodies free from pollution.
